Knitters whose feet aren't normal sizes don't get the fuss about hand-knit socks. Though colorful sock yarn is alluring, a too-tight or too-loose sock isn't enjoyable to wear, and the irritation of an ill-fitting sock is enough to turn a knitter off sock knitting. Atherley (Beyond Knit and Purl) provides a solution: custom-fit socks based on a knitter's personal foot measurements. This isn't a new notion, but the author's thorough analysis and description of each aspect of the design process sets this book apart from earlier volumes on the same subject. Basic formulas for both a top-down and a toe-up sock are included, complete with blanks that can be filled in with stitch counts and measurements based either on foot measurements or on the detailed information provided in the foot size charts included in the book. Following the basic pattern, Atherley introduces variations, including simple stitch patterns such as ribbing or mock cables, as well as complex patterns featuring lace, cables, and stranded colorwork. A final chapter includes information about sizing socks for nonaverage feet--ideal for knitters who can never seem to get the fit correct on their hand-knit socks. VERDICT Socks are a go-to project for many knitters, and this detailed yet user-friendly guide demystifies the process of custom-fitting socks--meaning no more droopy or too-tight socks.
