Gr 3 Up-Elementary schoolers are invited to enter the realm of the paranormal and discover real-life grisly murders, hauntings, and curses. Each volume retells a handful of spooky tales, from ghosts at the Millicent Library in Fairhaven, MA, to vampires at the legendary Panteon de Belen cemetery in Guadalajara, Mexico (though only the English translation of the cemetery's name is provided in the text). The straightforward text and print size make this set useful as a hi-lo series. The narratives are suspenseful but appropriate for the audience. Each spread is a mixture of nightmarish photographs of historical places and crime scenes and CGI supernatural entities, shadows, and more. VERDICT Not for the faint of heart, this series will delight fans of bloody human history.

Rundown buildings, deserted locations, and ghost stories provide the creepy premise of this series. Each volume includes four spooky locations in a category, but some examples are a stretch and others are only indirectly related to their location. Background info, brief details on a specific haunting, and crisp photographs round out the presentation. There are four other spring 2017 books in this series. Reading list. Glos., ind.
