With the passage of Title IX legislation in the 1970s, women and girls have encountered fewer barriers to their participation in sports at all levels, community, high school, college, and professional. Some women have successfully lobbied to play traditionally male sports, such as football, ice hockey, and boxing. Women athletes still face discrimination and double-standards, and their teams and programs suffer from underfunding and lack of exposure. Women athletes also face unique challenges, such as rigid gender expectations, eating disorders, and body image problems. Readers are offered a thorough and ultimately inspiring survey of the complex history of female athletes, the current lay of the land, and the hopeful but by no means assured future of women's participation in sports. Most important, readers may be inspired to further the ongoing fight for women's full access and right to participation in sports at every level.

Grades 8-11 Despite the general focus, young men may also be interested in the well-researched and thoughtful information in the Young Woman's Guide to Contemporary Issues series. Common threads include helping teens find mentors, offering sample questions teens could ask of people such as guidance counselors and advisors, and lists of myths and facts. The attractive design uses plenty of color photographs with a signature soft color as background. Activism covers women engaged in social justice issues, especially focusing on women's issues, the history of women's rights, and ways teen girls can begin to help. Women and Sports is a topic covered elsewhere, but it's executed well, with attention to the pitfalls of eating disorders and drug use. Each book includes an excellent list of relevant organizations to contact for more information.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2013, American Library Association.)
