Grades 2-4 In this entry in the 10-title iCivics: Inspiring Action (Grade 3) series, Rice profiles four contemporary Indigenous leaders: Eddie Tullis, an advocate for quality native schools; Wilma Mankiller, the first modern female chief of the Cherokee Nation; Oren Lyons, a renowned lacrosse player, artist, and community activist; and Gay Kingman, a teacher and proponent of tribes receiving reservation gaming proceeds. Also included is a short fictional piece about an Indigenous boy preparing to attend a tribal outing. The writing is clear and concise, and Rice is careful to include tribal identifications for each leader. Full-color illustrations (captioned photographs and drawings) appear throughout; standard back matter also includes teaching suggestions. While the fictional piece lacks tribal specificity and feels a bit unrelated to the rest of this offering, this makes a good introduction to these contemporary leaders.
