When Natalie reluctantly agrees to attend a school reunion, she hits it off with former classmate Josh—a boy she barely spoke to while they were at school together—and finds herself swept up in a whirlwind romance with him. Then she receives a message: you can do better than marrying a murderer. As Natalie pieces together the tragic story of the teenage girl who drowned at Chedford Lake, she realizes she has the perfect opportunity to clear Josh's name. But it will mean putting herself in serious danger—and betraying someone she loves. With Josh spiraling deeper into despair and her own life torn apart by lies, can Natalie unravel what really happened before it's too late?

This psychological thriller, narrated by Peter Noble, traces the lives of several seriously damaged characters. While the prose is clear, literate, and often engaging, listeners are subjected to the psychotic outbursts of the guilt-obsessed male protagonist, Josh. The author delves into a variety of societal and mental health problems ranging from hoarding and bullying to spousal and child abuse as Noble conveys the many complexities of human emotions. Listeners can hear voices choked with tears, the suppressed anger in a muted response, and the fear in a mumbled rejoinder. Overall, Noble gives life to the story's dysfunctional characters. The story drags in places, but the ending is suitably terrifying. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2021, Portland, Maine
