Jake was born during a time that was as turbulent as any in American history. Mexico claimed Texas, but the American settlers who'd recently flooded in were more independent, and when the dictator Santa Anna set aside the Constitution of 1824 he launched a series of changes he had not foreseen. J
Jake, an orphaned teen whose uncle help him while he grows up, repays thim by helping his uncle's slaves after they escape an ambush by Mexican troops. A second uncle then puts him to work on his sailing ship as Mexican Texas drifts toward revolution. Jake, smuggler, sailor, blacksmith, finds himself part of the Texian forces in the opening battle of the revolution, and later leads women, children and the elderly away from Santa Anna;s advancing army.
