This cozy and witchy rom-com from Hogle (Just Like Magic) introduces the small mystical town of Moonville, Ohio, where fortune teller Romina Tempest and her sisters hope to expand the magic shop they co-own, if they can find the funds. When potential financier Mr. Yoon announces his upcoming wedding, Romina is determined to secure an invitation—but her only way in is as Mr. Yoon’s son Treavor’s date. Frenzied, funny Treavor is a good friend and game to fake a relationship—but their mission gets side-tracked when Romina learns that Treavor’s soon-to-be stepbrother is none other than Alex King, Romina’s high school sweetheart and the boy that broke her heart 11 years ago. Now, Romina wants Alex to pay for the pain he caused her, and what was supposed to be a small fake-dating scheme turns into a weeklong charade. Despite her grudge, Romina can’t deny the lingering attraction she shares with Alex, and sparks soon fly between them. After a slow start, Hogle ramps things into high gear with a fun take on the fake dating trope that will have readers genuinely wondering how Alex and Romina will find their way back to each other. The result is a beguiling and heartfelt story of rekindling love. Agent: Taylor Haggerty, Root Literary.

Narrator Valerie Rose Lohman will have listeners snort laughing through Hogle's fake dating witchy rom-com. Witch Romina Tempest uses the language of flowers to design perfect bouquets at a boutique in Moonville, Ohio. During wedding festivities, Romina fake dates her irreverent co-worker, Trevor, while her old flame, Alex King, glowers in annoyance. Lohman's voice for the morally flexible Trevor is spot-on, as are the voices for Romina's sister and her child. Romina and Alex share mock serious banter that engenders spontaneous laughter. Although Lohman's voices for Alex and Romina are sometimes indistinguishable, their sallies are highly entertaining. Lohman's slight lilt expresses Romina's joy in Moonville's quirky traditions and her family. Lohman presents a comedy edged with sweet sincerity in this series opener. A fake-dating scheme combines with a second-chance romance in Hogle's (Just Like Magic) series starter. It's set in the quaint, magical, fictional town of Moonville, Ohio, where the three Tempest sisters, Luna, Zelda, and Romina, run their family's shop, The Magick Happens. Romina is a flora fortunist who uses the language of plants to create magical charms via flowers and plants. She's hoping to expand the business and concocts a fake-dating scheme with her friend Trevor to secure a loan from his financier father. Then her old high school sweetheart Alex comes back into the picture, and things get interesting. Voice actor and musician, writer, producer, and director Valerie Rose Lohman provides the narration for this second chance at first love; her pleasant reading style provides an enjoyable listening experience, although listeners may occasionally struggle to distinguish the characters' voices. Though the story takes some time to gain momentum, fans of slow-burn romances should be charmed. VERDICT A warm start to a small-town, magic-laced romance series. Recommended for fans of witchy romances in the vein of Ann Aguirre's Witch Please.--Denise Garofalo
